Commentary by Brent Kellogg

July 14, 2009

Just yesterday I'd written how easy it is to predict how badly written soap opera plots will twist and turn and here today we have truck driver Mac Browning buying Cane Ashby's bar and you can almost see it won't be long until Deacon the Demon, bar owner he, buys the bar from Mac because what does she know of running a bar?

Who but a fool would buy anything Cane has to offer without first consulting a lawyer and maybe looking at the books to see if there isn't a line of creditors waiting for their money, or unused frozen blood in the icebox? I mean, Jesus. How dumb is Mac? And you can't help but wonder how dumb is Cane that he didn't care enough about granny Katherine that he'd pose as a doctor, or a nurse, to slip into the God Have Mercy Medical Center and find out for himself that the old woman is gonna be fine.

Never mind why Phillip Chancellor and Cane, now two separate sub-humans, haven't been arrested, it is apparently Jill Abbott's call as to whether Phillip will be forgiven and be considered "family" for a long as he's in town, and Cane gets to decide whether he, Cane, will stay or leave Genoa City. Funny though it was that Mac would ask that if Cane wasn't leaving, if he was staying. Hmm, gotta think about that one. I'm not leaving, so I must be staying - no?

Poor Phillip. Poor Nina Webster. They both share a child and not once has he asked about his son which is isn't strange considering how the men of Genoa City have a knack for not seeing their kids, i.e.: Jack Abbott and Paul Williams. Still, wouldn't a real man, even a gay one, have a slight interest in his son? "How is little Phillip doing," Phillip might ask, and Nina could say, "Oh, we call him Chance. Ain't that the cutest thing?" Phillip could add, "Why do you call him Chance" and Nina could say, "You silly. His last name is Chancellor. Chance. Get it?" Then Phillip could ask, "Why don't you call yourself Nina Chancellor?" She could retort, "Because I'm not Daniel Romalotti" and probing deeper he could quip, "The kid who thinks Danny Romalotti is his father?" before asking if it's true Danny is gay which it must be considering how a washed up "rock star" isn't married or has a girlfriend.

The entire dialog could extend to the odds of a father and son being gay and how much alike Phillip and Chance are since we've heard Chance is gay too. Sadly, all we got was Phillip, with his "could never be the man" mommy and granny wanted whine, asked how a queer could have sex with Nina, said it was easy. He was drunk at the time and you'd have to be to have sex with Nina. As for when Phillip had the hots for Christine 'Bug" Blair, Phillip said that while he liked the critter he harbored certain urges for men which given the Bug's A-sexual personality any man might do. Furthermore, that Phillip suffered for so long with "loneliness" is understandable because think about it. Who does Phillip have to call a friend? Cane?
