In real life I've been blasting getting old people I know for their
seemingly stuck in the past love affairs, but here I am this week writing
about the past in Genoa City because, well, it's more exciting than what's
going on presently. For example, while Nick Newman and his ex having been
rehashing daze gone by, with Jack Abbott and Nikki Newman recalling their
dead baby, why hasn't Victoria Hellstrom recalled she's no stranger to dead
babies either?
Roll the videotape back to February 2, 2002.
For all the times Victoria Newman has mentioned lately how she, like Sharon
Newman, has suffered a tragic loss, she has not once mentioned that like her
sister-in-law she too knows what it is like to lose a baby.
It was 1998 when Ms. Newman was given the presidency of Rash & Sassy
Cosmetics by her daddy. She loved her new position but didn't put much
energy into running the company. Instead, Victoria concentrated her efforts
on keeping her husband away from her former mother-in-law.
Cole Howard had tossed his wife away in favor of the older, more experienced
Ashley Abbott. What's worse, Abbott was his father-in-law's former wife. But
Victoria wasn't ready to give up. She got Cole loaded one night and the
couple had sex. It's a well known fact in Genoa City that men have the
amazing ability to 'perform' when they're drunk and even though he didn't
deny having sex with his wife, Cole told Victoria he wanted a divorce.
At about the time Victoria agreed to let Abbott have her man, Dru Winters
was accepting an out of town modeling deal. When Dru was far away in Paris,
Victoria and Neil Winters began dating. Soon, Victoria began having dizzy
spells which could mean only one thing. She was pregnant with Cole's baby.
After their divorce, Victoria told Cole he was the father of her unborn baby
but by this time Cole had married Ashley. Months later, Dru returned,
discovered Neil was involved with Victoria and told Neil she wanted a
divorce.
After Neil's divorce Victoria suffered an appendicitis attack and was rushed
to the hospital where she gave birth prematurely to a baby girl she named
Eve. When she decided to baptize the baby Cole gave her the bad news. The
baby was dead.
An upset Victoria returned to the Newman ranch and Cole took off to join his
wife in Paris. It was predictable that Cole and Ashley would break up and
Victoria's relationship with Neil didn't go anywhere.
And who did Victoria blame for her dead body?

In their strongest criticism to date, members of the Newman family ganged up
on a shunned Sharon Newman in a sizzling snitfest. The walls of the Newman
ranch rocked as verbal bombs launched by Victoria Newman exploded around her
sister-in-law.
"You've put my brother through hell!" an irate Victoria told a haggard
Sharon as she fought back vomit pangs and tried to clear her flu-ridden
head.
"My family has been treating you with kid gloves. No more! You need a
reality check," Victoria bellowed, in direct reference to Sharon's tenacious
assertion that Nick Newman killed her baby.
Victoria pointed out that she too had fallen on sad times, but she didn't
get all freaky when Ryan McNeil was shot to death on their wedding day, and
she didn't go around blaming people. A few hours of mourning and she was
back to her bitchy-self. If she could do it, why not Sharon?
"The situations are not the same at all," Sharon whimpered, rationalizing
that a crazy woman killed McNeil whereas the death of her baby was a
"personal matter."
"What she is doing affects my brother, my niece and my nephew. I'm not going
to let her need to blame someone ruin their lives. That's not the way it
works with me," Victoria spat.
A few days later, Victoria jumped on a plane, flew to darkest Africa, and
caught a cab to Kenya's version of a motel 6. It was near midnight when she
knocked on Neil Winters' door. Inside, a near empty whisky bottle stood out
like a sore thumb.
"Do you mind if I take a drink?" Winters asked.
